My good friend has alerted me to the fact that Gymboree has a new line of baby girl clothes out which is "asian" flavored in that it has little paper lanterns on the clothes. I am a sucker for paper lanterns. Throw something at me with a lantern on it--I will love it for sure. (I'm also kind of fascinated with a color called "barely green".)
So I am going out on a limb and buying clothes for our daughter. Trouble is, I still am endlessly debating on what size to buy. I am mighty afraid that I will buy 12 months, only to end up with an 18-month-old. But the way Gymboree moves the lines in and out of its stores I don't dare wait too much longer. I guess I can either buy 12 months and hope for the best, or buy 18-24 months and wait a year for her to wear them. Or buy a few things in each size?
Anyway, if you are out there and you've already been to China to pick up your girl can you please tell me how old she was and what size she was wearing? I'm paranoid about showing up with a whole bunch of clothes that are all too big (or too small, but I think that possibility is much lower). Yes, today I'm paranoid and obsessed today. Mostly I just want to buy something for her already.
Posted by grrlTravels at January 26, 2005 4:59 PMPing was one year to the day when we met her, and was a bit small for the 12 month size clothes we brought. The 18 month clothes were swimming on her, and she still wears some of them now at 2 years. I'd say go with the 12 month - chances are, even if your daughter is older than that, she'll still fit into them. My two cents . . .
When are you expecting that referral now?
Posted by: Brooklyn Mama at January 26, 2005 8:34 PMBuy all and Return Return Return. Hey you worked retail, that's the business baby.
Anyway, that's what D & A did before J (whose initial IS his name) was born. They bought girl and boy stuff from Gap and then took back the girly stuff...
A comment on the previous comment, she prob. will be small to our American standards of baby sizes. It's also pos. that the mother might not have taken the best care of herself during pregnancy and then the baby has been in an orphanage til she comes to your loving arms...
Actually, i really don't know, i'm sure you know much more than me - since you sudied this extensively and i'm just going on intuition. But all this to say, i agree with the above (or below - whichever) comment.
Posted by: Bec at January 26, 2005 10:37 PMHi. I'm roughly in the same boat you're in (DTC 9/16/04) and have been buying everything from 9-12 months to 2T. Hoping she can wear most of it, eventually. I anticipate having to buy some 6-9 month sizes right before travel if our referred kidlet is under year old. Have fun!
Posted by: cheryl at January 27, 2005 2:06 AMOur daughter was 18 months old on Gotcha Day and wearing 6-9 month clothes, that were still a little big on her. Most Chinese babies wear 6-9 months or 6-12 months, even if they are a little over a year. There was a 2 year old little girl in our group and she was wearing 12 months! I would buy mostly 12 and 18 months if it's something you really want her to wear. Oh BTW- Our daughter will be two on Valentines Day and has gained 7 pounds since Gotcha Day & is wearing mostly 12-18 months. 12 months fits her nicely but she is too long for it.
Posted by: Nancy at January 27, 2005 12:19 PMI was just in Gymboree yesterday & was looking at that line again of such cute little girl clothes (I think I need a girl, but yours will suffice if need be!). I'd have to agree with Becky - buy it in several sizes and then take back whatever you don't use. I was there with a friend and when she saw me looking at them she knew immediately it was for you - my cousin who loves anything Asian!
