Hmmmm. March craft is two weeks late. But I did do it, and I like it. So I think it's all going to be ok.

I had a couple of different ideas for recycling. I did want to find some fabric to use for something else, but a couple of quick trips (read: kids were with me) to the local thrift shops did not yield anything hopeful. The thrift shops I visited all had nice things that you might still want to wear. That is not what I was looking for. I was hoping for some really thick polyester or some cute old curtains or an old beaded dress. I know some of you are laughing. It's ok. eBay has ruined me for most of the rest of the world. Anyway, the thrift shops were disappointing. I have no idea where to try next for real thrifting. I suppose I am going to do yard sales and estate sales and the flea market.

I was able to nab two things at the local Goodwill shop. Did the rest of you know that at least half of the clothes at Goodwill have tags on them? What is up with that? Where does the stuff that Goodwill rejects go? I think that is the stuff I want. Oooops, off on another digression. I found a dress, gently worn, American Outfitters, and a tank top, also clearly washed a few times, Old Navy, that weren't too dear and I bought them. I added some fabric I got in a swap from Shelba. I bought a pattern that said E-A-S-Y in big letters on the front.

I haven't sewn in years. I used to at least know how to read and follow a pattern so I was hopeful that it would all come back. With a few missteps it did. I machine basted the straps on the wrong side at first, but I knew they were wrong right away and that should count for something. I had to search the internet for a bit to find a site that actually explained understitch in a way that I could understand. And it is so easy. Why does it sound so complicated?

I like the way the flowers and vines on the two fabrics play off each other.

For some reason I decided that this pink dress needed some orange. When I went to the fabric store I had something specific in mind, and when you head to Joann Fabrics that isn't the best idea. I wanted something that looked Indian to go with the vines on the front, but with some orange and perhaps some pink. I think I would have done better in a shop catering to poor college students.

I love beads in most any form, even the most obnoxious. This dress feels beachy because the the fabrics have been prewashed and I thought a few beads would make it that much more summery. Since the top was lined (and the lining was slipstitched to the skirt) I felt like the beads and their threads would be safely encased. I like the little orange seed beads a lot.

One of the beauties of this project was the skirt. Since it was already a skirt, I lopped it off, removed a bit of zipper on the one side and sewed up the seam and it was ready to attach to the top. No fussing. No hemming. Lovely. It worked out great. I wanted to bead it up a bit more, but she is only 2 1/2 and the skirt isn't lined. So it will stay as is.

She actually hates dresses right now. She didn't want the dress on today, but then again it was very windy, rainy, and cold (45) so I can't blame her for not wanting the sundress. I am hoping for a change of heart when the weather breaks.

I already have a good idea for April's Get Your Craft On challenge APRON. That's the good news. The bad news is that I need to get to a flea market, a fabric store, and probably a thrift shop. And that's before I even start with anything. Sigh. I like the apron craft challenge. I am all about aprons these days.

[I tried to put these in order of what comes first here in the great northeast. I keep having internal debates with myself. I am sure that the crocuses come first. The forsythia (which I always thought was quite ugly) is my first real harbinger of spring. The crocuses will come out so early that there is still cold weather to be had, but the forsythia does seem to wait until the all clear has been sounded. I'm hazy on the appearances of the Lily of the Valley and the pussy willows. I never see pussy willows in the wild. Lilacs are last, but I have a keen fondness for them. Every time we move I think I will plant lilacs at my house, to savor the few short weeks they are blooming. I never have, but I still intend to.]

Ok, so I was late finishing my February craft. I had one idea which I then decided was too hard and too complicated and I moved on to something else and then we went on vacation and then we got home and everyone was sick and I was very busy and now it is March 12. Huh.

Some days my heart feels too vulnerable, and I need to send it away for a bit to protect it.

I send it down to the bottom of the sea to stay with a friendly clam.

He is always happy to guard it for me. His own heart is too small, and my giant people heart is so strong that he grows and grows.

Occasionally I have to wrestle it back, but we always laugh about it afterwards.

Ok, this month was a bust. It was good if I wanted to learn something, which I did. I learned a lot, such as:
1. Even though I carefully made the front and the back of the heart the same size and lined them up a million times, when I sewed them together they were misaligned and the heart looks bad on the bottom.
2. Sewing wire in between two pieces of thin cotton isn't all that fun.
3. 20 ga wire is too thick.
4. Expending time and energy on sewing the wire is no guarantee that the clam will actually be shape-able once finished.

So there you have it. A big bust, but a learning experience. I actually enjoyed it when I wasn't wrestling with the wire, string, and sewing machine all at once.

Next month I am doing something easier. Pinky swear.

If you know me, you know that it wasn't going to be too long until the monthly theme was something close to my heart. And what is closer to my heart than recycling? Well lots of stuff, actually, but not when it comes to crafting.

I love that Disney recycles cans and bottles from the hotel rooms. It always pains me when I stay somewhere and I see the cleaning people taking the cans that I have carefully rinsed and set in a neat row on the sink and throwing them immediately into the big trash bag. Wasn't my neat little row indication enough that I meant for the cans and bottles to be separated and recycled? As soon as I see them do that, I begin stashing the cans and bottles elsewhere so that I can recycle them myself.

The thing that Disney does not do that makes me a teensy bit crazy is they don't recycle paper. This trip I packed 2 paper bags and 4 or 5 plastic bags in the suitcases rather than throw them away. There was some more paper--a cardboard cup holder and some other bits that I desperately wanted to pack as well, but we left the packing to the last minute and we were running around like crazy and I just couldn't get my head around where to shove the other papers. I left them sitting on the kitchen counter with the pathetically small hope that someone would love them enough (or love land enough or trees) to recycle them. In my pleasant dreams they are recycled.

So recycling and crafting. Lovely concept. I haven't the faintest clue what I will be making this month, which is a tad bit disconcerting. However, since I haven't yet finished February's challenge I don't have time to worry about not having an idea for March.

Recycling. Is good. Let's see what you've got!

The assignment was to shoot something you wouldn't normally shoot, to move out of your comfort zone, to try something new.

This shot is unusual for me. I had to stand on the stroller to get the angle looking down. But more strange for me is the other angle. I am such a linear thinker. I love right angles. I want everything as square to the camera as possible. This does not always make for interesting photos. I have to fight the impulse all of the time. Fight the impulse!

I took this shot after sundown without a tripod. Goodness look at me trying new things! I do not love this shot, but K. likes it a lot. He says it is interesting. I say that something, anything, needs to be in focus. Also, I think the colors are too soft for me. (I hate the pink/purple background.) Well, it's all too soft for me. But I submitted it because it is interesting and because it isn't perfect and because it is something I wouldn't normally shoot. My Z. She is walking. Mostly away from me. As quickly as she can. Giggling all the while.

Hmm, somehow I am three lessons behind. How did that happen?

Lesson 4:
A photoshop thing. I used this photograph (again). I learned what actions were. I used Amber's actions. They did make my photograph look better.

Lesson 5:
More photoshop stuff. But a great assignment. Take a photo that tells a story. I suppose the best photos tell a story, or make you wonder about things, although I had never understood photography in quite those terms. So. A photo that tells a story. Is not the easiest thing in the world to do. No, not easy.

I shot a lot of photos. I came up with a lot of ideas. I tried to shoot strangers. (That was harder than I expected it would be.) I think the photo I chose to submit tells a story.

Here are some other photos which I took but didn't submit. I think some of them tell a story. It's a hard thing to know, since as the one taking the photo you know the story already.

Or, A Lesson in (Learning) from My Mistakes
My third assignment was to photograph food. At first I was excited about the assignment. But as the week progressed and my photographs went from bad to worse I started to worry. And obsess. About photographing food. It was an interesting week.

Since the course is titled "Photographing the Everyday" and since we've discussed using natural light at length, well, I felt like I should try to take everyday shots of food using natural light. I stayed away from artsy shots of fruit and vegetables (which I may still take for myself). I stayed away from using the lights on the lightbox. I tried to answer the assignment as I believed it was intended to be answered. I ended up taking a lot of lousy shots of food.

K. liked this shot of spicy shrimp stew. I didn't like the fact that the shrimp were still raw. I think the cast of the photo is too warm/red and although I've played with the settings several times I can't get it to look any better.

Bo-ring! The angle was supposed to add interest. Uh, not so much. Perhaps I should have been a little closer? I have no idea. I think this shot was doomed from the start.

Clams. I love them. Not these clams in particular. These clams were as bad to eat as they were to photograph. I overcooked them and I should have shot the photos against a contrasting background. I didn't realize how hard it was going to be to make clams interesting. Turns out to be hard. They were so pretty sitting on the ice in their little net bag...

I do not hate this shot of the baby bok choy. But after I took it it felt a little forced. I was going for whimsical, but I don't find this all that whimsical. Or interesting. It was shot in our homemade lightbox using natural light. An interesting experiment that didn't work all that well.

Here is a quick lesson in being cognizant of your surroundings. I hate the placemats. I can't get past them--they ruin the shot. A shot that wasn't all that good to begin with, but which is totally blown out the window by the placemats.

Submitted. Too bad the whole fish is gone. This shot is ok. I should have angled it a bit more to focus on his eye, and try to make it look like he was looking at me. Or something. I do like the texture of the coating, the scales, and the lettuce. It's very texture-y. Perhaps too texture-y? I also like the little beads of condensation near his mouth. It looks a bit like he is breathing. (Which is kind of sad and morbid, come to think of it.)

Submitted. This shot is ok too. It's a pretty posed shot. But is it interesting? No. That was the problem with every single shot in the end. It was so difficult to make the food interesting or engaging. I had some ideas for different kinds of shots--the farmer's market or the fish shop or something like that, something more action-y. But it's winter. And it's cold. And I ran out of time. And I'm tired. Those shots did not happen last week.

It was an excellent lesson on composition and making your photographs more interesting and dynamic. I loved the lesson. The assignment made me think (hard) and challenged me and made me take a lot of photos. Which I assume means that the lesson was successful, even if I did not end up with any shots of which I am proud.

Amber is taking names for her next class. If you are somewhat familiar with your camera and you'd like to learn how to take shots of the everyday, and if you are interested in portraiture in particular, I'd encourage you to think about this class. It's got me thinking! (I'm not as much interested in portraiture as many of my classmates, but I have found all of the lessons relevant to my interests as well.) See Amber's blog for more information.

I am obsessed with dioramas. I cannot tell you why. There doesn't seem to be any rational explanation for being obsessed with dioramas. Perhaps I was not forced to construct enough dioramas in elementary school. I can recall only one, and the details are fuzzy. Shoebox is as far as I can get. Whatever the reason I spend far too much time reflecting on dioramas.

When I try to get logical about it I realize that my diorama obsession most likely places me squarely in league with the dollhouse people. Not that I am saying that is a bad place to be. Tiny furniture, tiny kitchens with tiny mixers and tiny lifelike food, bathrooms with tiny rolls of toilet paper. Okay, perhaps it is an odd place to be. But I still love the dioramas.

To be honest I've been hiding my diorama obsession. There doesn't seem to be a way to bring it up that doesn't feel contrived. But today, today two of my passions collided so unexpectedly and spectacularly that I am forced to come forward.

I was reading the Flickr blog. I never get a chance to read it although I find it interesting. So I am skimming through and voila, I see an entry with a photograph by a woman who takes photos of the dioramas that she builds. Dioramas. And Photography. Together. In perfect harmony. Lightbulbs! Fireworks!!! Explosions of sound and noise and light!!!!! Photographs of dioramas. Why didn't I think of that?

The Flickr Photograph that started it all

Diorama Goodness:
Krista Peel (click on miniatures)

I had a bunch of diorama related links from a previous excursion with google. The links, they are gone! To a serial bookmarker like me this is serious. I found a few of them (see above). But the silver lining to all of this is that I just got another great idea for a documentary for K. and I. We are all about ideas for documentaries. Man, we are a goldmine of good docu ideas. Too bad we will never have to time make them all.

Googling "diorama" is one of those exercises in which you can lose several hours, if not days. There are all kinds of people making all kinds of dioramas out there. It warms my heart. And scares me. And makes me think that the dollhouse people are fairly regular folks after all.

P.S. If you google "diorama" you will see many, many historical and military scenes. I do not like those! No! No to tanks and battleships and tiny army guys. No! No! No!

K. and I had hours and hours to kill on Saturday while strangers wandered through our house. We went fabric shopping.

A few weeks ago K. and I had a conversation about how everyone should know how to sew. I told him that all of the kids would learn how to use a sewing machine, even if just to sew something very easy. We also decided that the kids all needed to know how to: cook, do laundry, and use a hammer, screw driver, and saw.

A week later K. said, "I want to learn how to sew. Can you teach me how to sew?" Which is all well and good on the old machine, but on the new machine? I can't really sew yet. Plus K. is a Big Idea Guy, and so he wants to sew complicated things.

Anyway, he bought his fabric and I bought mine. I have no projects in mind. I just bought whatever struck my fancy.

The logical side of me says that this borders on offensively stereotypical. But it's just so cute. Perhaps I will never use it, I don't know. It's just so cute. Did I mention that it's cute?

The tattoo fabric. It's a bit gory, but I. Had. To. Have. It.

Fun 50s-ish kitchen fabric. For some kitchen project that I have not yet dreamed up. Or an apron of course, but that just seems so obvious today. Perhaps another day it won't.

I have no idea what I will do with this. But isn't it cute? I keep having an urge to make E. and Z. little matching outfits a la The Sound of Music but I doubt I will torment my kids like that. Perhaps just for some photos?

I love Hawaii. This fabric is a bit too pink for me, but I saw the words "Volcano House" and "Kona Inn" and the bolt was in my hands and I was on the way to the cutting table.

I love bamboo. In almost any form. Except those pitiful little Lucky Bamboo plants you can buy at the mall.

K. and I fell in love with winter blossoms while we were in Changsha falling in love with Z. This fabric reminds me of winter blossoms.

P.S. I am on some kind of terrible novelty fabric kick. I will never sew with 90% of the fabrics I am attracted to right now. Perhaps I need some kind of intervention?

The assignment this week was to photograph indoors using natural light. What a great assignment to get you thinking about light and looking at the quality of the light.

I submitted this for the assignment. I love this photo! K. was tickling them. (He is my photography assistant, when he's around.) I was going for bright, natural, gorgeous light.

The light is coming in from the skylight and illuminating her face.

E. is slightly out of focus. I just love his expression. (Ignore the Little Dutch Boy hair—we're trying to.)

The side of her face is a little blown out (still working on that!) but I love Z.'s expression. She looks so big!

I was trying for a silhouette, but my subjects are never as dark as I'd like them. There are windows on three sides of this room, plus a skylight, so I think there was just too much light bouncing around.
